Chelsea moved to within a point of the top of the leaderboard with their 2-0 Super Sunday victory over Southampton. Antonio Conte’s side clinched their fourth win in a row at St Mary’s stadium. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa with both on point in the decisive win. They are now serious title contenders and here are a few reasons why:
The new system works
The recent run of form for Chelsea can be put down to a change in formation. They changed from 4-2-3-1 to 3-4-3 after their 3-0 defeat by Arsenal and have not looked back since. They did without conceding a single goal. “We’ve worked hard on the shape the manager’s brought and we’re getting the rewards,” said Gary Cahill
Hazard has returned to form and has been the biggest beneficiary of the change in formation. As left flank, he was ineffective last season and has been given the chance to roam under this new direction. The numbers show a huge difference. He has scored five goals in the last ten games, which is more than he scored in 31 games last season.
Yet another player that languished last season only to prosper this year under Conte’s leadership. He is eight goal of the season in the second half of the game put him at the top of the scoring charts. He now hits the target 71 percent of the time compared to last year’s 53. “He’s a brilliant player to have on your team when he’s playing like today,” said Neville in the Sky Sports commentary box.
